Haldon L. "Hal" Smith (b. January 25, 1924, Peking China; d. December 29, 2012, Ann Arbor) served as a Democrat on the Ann Arbor City Council, representing Ward 3 from April 1994 to November 1995.

Obituary

Haldon Smith, 88, died peacefully at Arbor Hospice on December 29, 2012. He was born January 25, 1924 in Peking (Beijing), china, where his parents, Dr. Dennis V. and Hazel Littlefield Smith were part of the Methodist medical mission. The family later settled in Palos Verdes, California where Haldon spent most of his childhood. He attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota until WWII when he joined the Navy and served as a lieutenant specializing in radar. After the war he returned to college where he received B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of Michigan. Hal retired from Gilbert commonwealth Associates in Jackson, MI and then retired again after several years at Vector Research in Ann Arbor. He was a founding member of AABL (Ann Arbor Bicycle League), which established Ann Arbor's first bicycle paths, and he wrote the first report about bicycle use and parking for the City. Hal took great pleasure serving on city Council (1994-"96) and in his participation on Huron Valley Watershed Council projects. Hal enjoyed spending time as a tree farmer at Hickory Hill, his land in central Michigan, and on backpacking adventures, road trips across the country, and travel to foreign lands. Hal was a kind, loving gentleman and will truly be missed by his family and many friends. Haldon is survived by his wife, Tina, his children, Laurie Smith and David Mattern (Pam Wilder), and his stepchildren, Tim Beyer (Jayne Palu), Gwen Beyer and Amy Freeman, and four grandchildren, Tiffany and Kiana Freeman and Allyson and Ryan Beyer. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 3:00pm at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens 1800 N. Dixboro Road.
