The District 214 Newcomer Center serves high school students who have recently arrived in the United States and are new to the English language. Through personalized instruction and innovative technology, students are able to learn the language and return to their "home" school: the District 214 comprehensive high school that they'd normally attend. Students generally remain with the program one or two semesters, depending on individual needs.  Typically, 10 or more languages are represented by students in the program, and all students receive a full academic schedule -- including English, math, social studies, PE/health and reading -- regardless of their language background or when they enter the program. While academics are the core of the Newcomer experience, the program's teachers believe education doesn't stop at the end of the school day. Staff is able to meet with families in their homes and help connect them with community organizations and evening courses for the adults in the family. Additionally, after-school programming provides students with cultural connections to what they're learning during the day, and many of the students participate in co-curricular activities, including clubs and athletics, at their home comprehensive high school, a model that can help them discover their passion and reach their full potential.

The end goal is a successful transition to a District 214 comprehensive high school and success at high school and in the future.
