I am going to take you on a journey through the life of another.  It might be fun, maybe, but I know you will learn a lot.

First, you are going to create your own wiki page.  Use your own name and add your picture (a selfie) using instagram.  Add a sentence or two about who you are.  No identifying information - just general adjectives.

Don't forget to come back to continue on the journey.  And, don't forget to "save" before you leave your page.

NOW, onto the adventure!

You want to fly to Washington, DC to see the sights and learn more about US history first hand.  However, there some changes in your profile.  I want you to pretend you are a small woman, confined to a wheelchair.  You have a service dog because you have difficulty taking care of yourself due to weakness in your hands and upper body.  Your wheelchair and your dog are your freedom to continue living your life independently.  Since you have all these special needs, you have a lot of preparation to do before your actual trip.   Create a tumblr page to collect ideas and suggestions from others differenlty abled so you can avoid as many issues as possible.  According to law, you have to give the airlines a 48 hour notice .  It's not easy to travel, I guess.  Don't forget to come back to this wiki to continue the journey.

Ok, we're all set, I think.  Let's see:

  • Reservations made - check.
  • Told them about the service dog - after much discussion and hassle, everything is ready to bring him on the plane with me - check.
  • They had the 48-hour notice of the wheelchair and other services you need - check.
  • My wheelchair meets all the requirements to be loaded on the plane - check.

Now, the day of the trip arrives and you are ready to go.  You think!

The plane takes off.  Everything is fine.

You call and call the steward several times.  She doesn't seem to understand that you need to move out of the seat.  Maybe she doesn't want to but, then again, maybe she doesn't understand me.  I'll use my Dragon Dictation App and type her a text for her to read.

"I need to use the restroom."

Try it on your phone.  It is a freee download.  Don't forget to come back to finish the journey.

Here they come.  That was a help.  Maybe they were trying to figure out how they were going to meet my needs.

That trauma passed and your dog and you arrive at your destination.  Home free!  Well, not quite.  At the luggage area, you retrieve your luggage and wheelchair only to find your chair has been disabled with duct tape and cable ties to keep it still while it was on the plane.  Meeting this challenge is going to be interesting.  Wait, in your suitcase you have a Swiss Army knife.  You ask the attended to get it out of your bag and cut the wheelchair free.

No one would believe the trip I had unless I tell them.  How do you do that?  Step by step, create a prezi to share with the airline to explain how difficult the trip was and make some suggestions on how it can be improved.  Surely, you aren't the only person differenlty abled who travels by air.  Thank you for your help getting the word out.
