Flyer for an event sponsored by the Concerned Citizens for a Better Neighborhood and the Black Community Network

The Concerned Citizens for Better Neighborhoods were a neighborhood group co-founded by John Lee Johnson. The group met at the Douglass Annex of the Douglass Center, Champaign County Park District.

Former members include: Rev. Robert Jackson (February 22, 19I0 - April 2, 1996), Catherine Hogue, Maudie Edwards, and many, many more.

Activities of the Concerned Citizens for Better Neighborhoods:

  • In 1987 the group organized to deal with drug trafficking around Douglass Park. It expanded from neighborhood watch activities to after-school tutoring, summer recreation and other activities for youth. Many people have worked with the Concerned Citizens group to improve the Douglass Park neighborhood, she Mable Thomas. "A neighborhood is a very fragile thing," Thomas said. "It takes a lot of people who each give a little to keep a neighborhood going."
  • An after-school program organized in conjunction with Volunteer Illini, a University of Illinois student group, led by Kelly Tsai.
