Overview
Darien is often regarded as one of the most Republican-leaning towns in Connecticut in terms of state and federal politics. Town-wide, about half of all active voters are registered with the GOP, while one third of voters are unaffiliated independents and the remainder are Democrats. In the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney defeated Barack Obama in Darien by almost 30 percentage points, giving Romney his second largest margin of victory in Connecticut after the neighboring town of New Canaan (where he won by 31 percentage points). Moreover, in the 2014 Connecticut gubernatorial election, Republican Tom Foley defeated incumbent governor Dannel Malloy by 38 percentage points (Malloy won the state-wide race). Local politics, however, are less heavily dominated by Republicans; the town first selectman from 2003 to 2009, Evonne Klein, was a Democrat.
