Born in New York, Barnes came to California during the Gold Rush in 1850 then returned to New York in 1853 and then came back and settled in Oakland.5 He is said to have made the first planing mill in Oakland on First Street before moving to Vallejo and establishing the first planing mill there. The Oakland Mill, the Pioneer Planing Mill, was built in 1865 and had 4 employees.4 Barnes was heavily involved in yachting and boating and competed locally.1 Unfortunately, he also died in a boating accident in 1899 after sailing to Alaska. Guinn was married twice: first to Adelia Dunning in New York and then to Elmira Pankost in California.6
