The Eng family has deep California and Oakland roots.

The family can trace their roots back to a 2-year old girl, the sole survivor of a fire in a gold mining camp in the 1850s. By 1906 the family had moved to San Francisco, and like thousands of others, fled to Oakland following the 1906 earthquakeRaymond Eng was born a few years later in 1911, and went on to a lengthy career as an optometrist and a member of the Oakland city council.
