Jeremiah ("Jerry") J. Hanifin (May 15, 1834 - __) was a hotel owner, saloonkeeper, politician, liquor store owner, Oakland Fire Commissioner, Supervisor and Chairman of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
In 1868 Hanifin bought the Cosmopolitan Hotel, which was located on second floor of the building at the corner of 7th and Broadway, from Joseph Dieves. In 1875, Hanifin opened a saloon on the ground floor of this building. Hanifin apparently operated the saloon until 1904, when he sold the saloon to Gus Dahlke. The saloon, near the County Court House and Hall of Records, was a popular spot for local politicians to spend time socializing. Some sources say Hanifin sold the hotel in 1872, focusing his attention on a chain of liquor stores he owned, but this is not consistent with a 1904 Tribune article about the sale of the saloon.
Hanifin was the Oakland Fire Commissioner from 1873 to 1876. From 1881 to 1890 Hanifin was a County Supervisor and Chairman of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
Jeremiah Hanifin and Eliza J. Farley married in 1856 and together they had nine children.
The 1877 directory lists their address as 458 - 7th Street. 3 The 1887 directory lists their address as 1403 Grove Street. 2 This address was renumbered c.1910 to become 1807 Grove Street (now Martin Luther King Jr. Way). 1 The house is still standing.
