Nathaniel Gray came to California during the Gold Rush. He was the owner of the business N. Gray & Co in San Francisco., an undertaking business, which is believed to have taken care of 30,000 people.1 Gray was involved in the San Francisco Bible Society and the First Presbyterian Church there.He was also the director of the San Francisco Theological Seminary and the San Francisco Benevolent Society. A building at Mills College is named after him.

He was the father of Giles Gray who was prominent in Oakland and California politics.
