Cassadaga

Cassadaga, Florida is a small unincorporated community halfway between Orlando and Daytona Beach. Cassadaga is most popular for their many psychics, healers and mediums throughout the community. There are so many  within the community that Cassadaga has been named the “psychic capital of the world.” The name Cassadaga originates from a Seneca Indian word meaning “water beneath the rocks.” Cassadaga became a well known spiritual town because of the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist camp.

History

George P Colby is the founder of the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association. George Colby is a medium from Pike, New York. Colby was known to travel the country to give readings and séances to people in need. During his travels George Colby worked with many different spirit guides that would help him on his journey. One spirit guide who made an enormous impact on George Colby was a gentleman named Seneca. Seneca was a Native American spirit guide who shared his knowledge with George Colby. In a little Iowa town back in 1870 a séance was performed. Throughout the séance George Colby was told by his spirit guide Seneca that he would travel to the south and establish a successful spiritual community. Spirit guides are always on the right track so George Colby started his journey to find the perfect home for this spiritual community. Seneca described the location for the promised land. The area needed lakes and it needed to be surrounded by uncommon hills according to his spirit guides. George Colby was determined to find the perfect place for this spiritual oasis. He traveled throughout the entire country and searched for a place to best fit their needs. Finally, George Colby made it to Florida and found the ultimate destination for the camp. In a little town right outside Central Florida George Colby purchased around 75 acres of land. Once he settled into his new land, George Colby continued to travel and work as a medium. Unfortunately George Colby placed the idea of this spiritual community on the back burner and let years go by. It wasn’t until 1894 when a couple of ladies from the Summertime spiritualist camp in upstate New York came to George Colby for help to find a location for their summer camp. After searching for the perfect location they came to realize that George Colby’s property is the best fit for the camp. The Southern Cassadaga spiritualist camp was established in 1894. George Colby deeded over 35 acres of his land to build the camp. Once the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp officially opened it became very well known throughout the spiritualist community. It became so popular that in 1991 the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp became a designated historic district. This camp was also placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After 125 years, residents say the spirits remain strong at Cassadaga

Today

The Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp is still open and is just as popular as it was back in the day. Now the camp consists of approximately 57 acres and is continuing to grow. Throughout the camp there are about 55 homes. Many of the residents are mediums and healers. Some of the residents will open up their homes and offer their services to the public. These healers who live at the camp become powerful and work in harmony with their beliefs. There are many events that happen throughout the Camp. There are many festivals that happen on the Camp. At these festivals you can receive a reading from a medium, there are vendors with food and metaphysical items, and more. There are 7 parks and meditation gardens throughout the community. Each one is different and offers a unique experience to become one with nature. After exploring the parks you have to check out the Camp bookstore. This bookstore has the largest collection of spiritualist books. Not only do they carry books they also carry art from local artists, crystals, Native American crafts, statues and many other unique items. Every weekend the camp offers historical tours, on these tours you will learn about Cassadagas history and their remarkable beginnings.
