The name of the California Department of Transportation, CalTrans is responsible for construction and maintenance of the state's highway system. According to the agency's website, http://www.dot.ca.gov, it manages more than 45 thousand miles of highways, provides inter-city rail service, permits more than 400 public use airports and hospital heliports. It has six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration, and the Equipment Service Center. It is also the largest consumer of orange paint in the country. OK, I just made that last part up. But if you see something orange in California, it probably does belong to CalTrans. So don't mess with it, unless you want a white stripe down the middle of your newly-paved living room. OK, I made that up, too. It would need a permit to put a highway through your house.
