According to Benjamin Breen's book "Tripping on Utopia," in 1972, Gregory Bateson (once married to Margaret Mead) began working as a lecturer in anthropology at UCSC and would frequently have lunch at Zanzibar with Frank Barron, a professor in the psychology department who had once worked with Timothy Leary at UC Berkeley on research on psychedelics.
