The San Francisco Tenants Union is your best friend if you're one of the 80 percent of residents who rent. The tenants union can provide you with counseling about your tenant-related issues. Their website, sftu.org, has lots of information about things like eviction, rent increases, etc.
They provide drop-in counseling — check their website for hours. You're asked to donate if you're not a member (or join!), but no one is turned away for lack of funds.
The tenants union is funded entirely by membership fees and donations. The SF Tenants Union was founded in 1971. They've helped fight for a number of tenant-rights and affordable-housing-related issues. "From the struggle for rent control in the 1970s to 1998's Proposition G (to end the abuses of OMI evictions), the Tenants Union has been the city's leading advocate for tenants."
The SF Tenants Union is part of the SF Anti-Displacement Coalition.
