Tony’s deployment in Italy is understood to have started with the initial invasion in September 1943 and to have continued with Motor Transport and mechanical support, likely to the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade (formerly 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade) through Italy.

At the time of writing, it is not known if Tony remained in Italy until February 1945 when the 1st Canadian Corps began the move to Northwest Europe to be re-united with the First Canadian Army or whether Tony moved to Europe sooner. Regardless, when he transferred to northwest Europe he was deployed with the 6th Armour Regiment, 1st Hussars.

In Tony’s photo record is a picture of Caen and of motor transport vehicles moving through a destroyed Caen. The Hussars played a role in the battles to take Caen. It is not clear whether Tony’s photos were taken in the aftermath of the battles at Caen, or were simply of later transport through that city.

Regardless, after February 1945, Tony would have been with the Hussars including: extending the bridgeheads over Twente Canal and clearing northeastern Netherlands in April; the capture of Oldenburg, Germany in May and entering Berlin in July.
