The famous 1993 film starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell about one cynical weatherman reliving Groundhog Day over, and over, and over again in Punxatawney, Pennsylvania was filmed in large part in Woodstock, IL. Due to its beautiful town square with a band stand (Woodstock Square Park), as well as being near the hometowns of Bill Murray and director Harold Ramis, Woodstock made the perfect location for this film. The older homes as well as the old-fashioned downtown area created an atmosphere of home and community that were just as much apart of the film as the characters in it. Every year on and around Groundhog Day, February 2nd, the city of Woodstock hosts Groundhog Days. Groundhog Days in Woodstock, IL include viewings of the movie as well as walking tours of the locations that were filmed. The annual festival also has its own Groundhog, Woodstock Willie, who makes his own prediction on the coming of spring.
