The Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) is made up of 63 elementary and K-8 schools, 7 middle schools, and 13 high schools. Several of the high schools are charter schools and intentionally built for a small number of students. For example, Sacramento New Technology High School has about 400 students, while the larger high schools such as John F. Kennedy High School and C.K. McClatchy High School have about 2500 students each. A few of the elementary schools have the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program, in which students, depending on the school, are either entered into an advanced academic after school program or in an advanced class altogether.
